Health benefits of cucumber and watermelon

Medinat Kanabe takes a look at the benefits inherent in eating cucumber and watermelon.
Cucumber is that long, cylindrical green fruit with watery, fresh taste seen mostly everywhere. It comes in different sizes and has rounded edges.

‘Mum almost aborted me’

Author of two commendable books, Dickson Ekhaguere, tells Medinat Kanabe the story of his struggle in life, his difficult childhood, and how he almost never was.
But for providence and the intervention of his aunt, who halted arrangements to abort his pregnancy, Dickson Ekhaguere would never have been born to this world and his blossoming talent as a playwright would not have had the opportunity of expression.
Sharing the story of his life, Ekhaguere, who has written two commendable books, Unstable, a play  and wealth- a children’s book, said life has not been fair to him.

Sex: A wife’s weapon

Why open a school for adults instead of the normal school? What have been the challenges?
I believe God opened my eyes to the area of adult education to make the ‘illiterates’ relevant to today’s world. When we started, we faced challenges of adults who thought there was no way they could learn to read again, that they have other things to do and responsibilities to meet…. So what we did was go the extra mile to encourage them.

Nigeria police and the culture of extortion

Medinat Kanabe highlights some of the  ways some unscrupulous policemen  extort money from motorists across the country.
One fine Thursday evening, Esther Amanze was returning home from her workplace in Mushin. She boarded a tricycle heading towards Isolo just before the fly-over at Daleko; as the tricycle approached Aiye Bus-stop, the operator noticed a police officer standing by and instinctively turned to Amanze. “Madam I beg hurry up, give me that your N50, I no wan give this man N100. She immediately obliged him and handed him the polymer note, which he in turn added a ten naira note and handed over to the policeman. On the police officer’s shirt was written the name, Tajudeen Oloyede.

Stubborn Prophet who turned God down for years

91-year-old Primate David Olonade is a survivor from the dark alleys of hell.
The founder of Ark of Covenant Church Lagos had heart-wrenching struggles with God before he finally started his church in August, 1960.
For years, he was totally paralysed and given up for death.
Recalling his battles with God, he said: “I never wished to be prophet of God. I was a rascal boy and very popular in 29 Binuyo Street, Isale gangan, Lagos.
“I grew up in the third house before Fashola’s father’s house. In fact the Fashola family brought us up. We used to carry ladies about and if any preacher comes to our area I don’t allow them preach despite the fact that my father and mother were prophet and prophetess. My mother died at 97 while my father was 122 and I am the last child of my parents.”

Myths and facts about menstrual pains


 Dysmenorrhoea (painful menstrual cycle) occurs in many women. There are also very many old myths about it that tend to mislead people or keep people from injuring themselves. In this report, Medinat Kanabe speaks to a doctor about dysmenorrhoea, its myths and facts.
Dr Harrison Otamere is Head of Department, HOD, Human Physiology, College of Medicine, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State.  He defines dysmenorrhoea as cramps at the supra pubic region of a woman’s body (below the belt) that occurs before or during menstruation.

First Class degree, yet no job


 In the old days, students wanted to graduate as the best in their classes and because of this read well. They did this because of the juicy package that comes with making a first class or being a veledictorian. 
This is no more the same as many graduates not excepting the first class graduates now leave school for years without a job.
