Fayose congratulates Buhari

Fayose, governor of Ekiti state and one of the arrowheads of President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential campaign, has saluted Muhammadu Buhari, describing the outcome of the presidential election as the will of God.
Fayose famously raised health concerns over Buhari and engaged in an acrimonious media campaign against the retired general.
With results of the election showing Buhari taking an unassailable lead on Tuesday afternoon, Fayose issued a statement, saying “the election result is the will of God
and Nigerians , and all lovers of peace, progress and development of Nigeria must accept it”. The governor said the election results should not be seen as victory or loss for any political party, adding: “To me, Nigerians and democracy won.”
Fayose said: “I salute Nigerians, especially the great people of Ekiti state.
“I salute President Jonathan for laying the most solid foundation for democracy in Nigeria. And I salute Major General Buhari for being a resilient and dogged
fighter.
“I urge Nigerians, irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political affiliation to respect the outcome of the election in the interest of peace, progress and
development of the country.
“Nigeria as a country is greater than any individual or group and it is my plea that no one should do anything to rock the boat of peace in the country.”

However, on that Thursday morning, Mr. Omeje took his motorbike to the suspect’s shop to change its back tube, and was charged N300. He paid N200 and promised to pay the balance of N100 in the evening.

Man kills Army Officer brother for marrying another wife

A warrant officer with the Nigeria Army, 50-year-old Joseph Ekpenyong Okon has been shot dead by his elder brother. The suspect was said to have taken the action as a way of protesting against the deceased’s decision to marry a new wife.

Jonathan begged me severally to dump APC – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has revealed how President Goodluck Jonathan repeatedly appealed to him to dump the All Progressives Congress, APC, and return to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.
Atiku said the president pleaded with him three times, once during a surprise midnight visit to his house.
The former VP made the
revelation in an interview with the Hausa service of the BBC, during which he also explained why he has not been very visible in the campaign rallies of his party’s presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.
Mr. Abubakar said he turned down the personal request of President Jonathan to return to the PDP on three separate occasions.
He said the last was in Abuja last Friday when the President paid him a surprise midnight visit.
He said on that day, he received speaker Aminu Tambuwal and ex-military leader, Ibrahim Babangida, and they held fruitful discussions.

Etcetera on: Mr President, please leave entertainers alone

Once again, Nollywood and President Jonathan are disconnected from the priorities of Nigerians. Millions are hungry and the country is headed off a cliff and what we get is the President having weekly dinner with celebs at Eko Hotel. Mr. President should know that all entertainers in the country won’t amount to a spoon of water in the bucket of our population.
I agree that our entertainers judging by recent behaviour are now seen as hungry men and women with insatiable appetite, but Mr. President, the larger part of the society are equally hungry and should be fed as well. Why feed just the entertainers? Isn’t that discrimination? What will the entertainers say to Jonathan except the usual lies and half truths? Can a man with a mouthful of undeserved food speak or say the truth?
An assessment of the lifestyle of these entertainers gives a false picture of the situation of things as it affects the society at large.

Boko Haram kill 11 in fresh attack

Boko Haram extremists have attacked a Nigerian border town, killing 11 people who had recently come home after military forces ousted the insurgents, witnesses said.
Umara said Cameroonian forces immediately crossed the border when gunfire erupted and drove the militants from Gamboru-Ngala.
"We were terrified when we started hearing gunshots echoing ... but everywhere became calm about an hour later. The soldiers informed us that it was the Boko Haram terrorists that came back," said another resident, Aji Kaumi.
He and Mr Umara said 11 civilians were killed on the outskirts of Gamboru.

Man who prepared parents like barbecue found guilty of murder

Hong Kong man who was accused of killing, dismembering, salting and cooking his parents has been found guilty of double murder.
During the 20-day trial the court heard how Henry Chau, 31, had dismembered his elderly parents before salting, cooking and packing their body parts into lunchboxes “like barbecued pork”.
The severed heads of 65-year-old Chau Wing-ki and his wife Siu Yuet-yee, 62, were found in March 2013, stuffed into two refrigerators in a bloodstained apartment, days after they were reported missing.
Other remains were found in a rubbish bin and packed into lunchboxes with rice.

Nigeria's president predicts Boko Haram defeat within a month, security analysts disagree

As Nigerians prepare to go to the polls next week, President Goodluck Jonathan has said in an interview that he expects Boko Haram will be flushed out of all the areas they have seized within a month.
"I'm very hopeful that it will not take us more than a month to recover the old territories that hitherto have been in their hands," he told BBC.
"They are getting weaker and weaker by the day," he said.
By the start of this year Boko Haram controlled around 20 local areas, a territory the size of Belgium. Earlier this month the militants pledged their allegiance to the Islamic State group.
President Jonathan, who is seeking re-election in a March 28 vote, has been heavily criticised for his failure to end Boko Haram's six-year-long Islamist insurgency.

Experimental anti-cholesterol drug shows promise

People taking an experimental drug called Repatha (evolocumab) for high cholesterol were half as likely to die or suffer a heart attack or stroke as those taking conventional statins, researchers said Sunday.
The findings were based on 4,465 patients who were studied for one year after completing an earlier phase of the drug's safety and efficacy testing.
The results could offer an alternative to the estimated one in three Americans with high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol who have been unable to manage their condition with diet, exercise and statin drugs currently on the market.
Patients were randomized to either receive evolocumab, made by the pharmaceutical company Amgen, injected under the skin in addition to standard care, or standard care alone, which meant taking the cholesterol-lowering statin drug recommended by their physician.
Evolocumab works differently than traditional statins. It is a human monoclonal antibody that blocks a harmful protein in the liver, freeing the organ up to remove LDL cholesterol from the blood.
This new class of drug is known as a PCSK9 inhibitor, and three different kinds, including evolocumab, are being studied in large clinical trials.
Previous research has shown evolocumab could lower LDL or "bad" cholesterol — the kind that contributes to plaque buildup in the arteries — by 61 percent.
The drug has yet to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, and more years of study are planned to test its longer term outcomes.
But after one year, the analysis showed the rate of cardiovascular events — such as death, heart attack, stroke, hospitalization or surgery to open blocked arteries — in the evolocumab group was 0.95 percent, compared to 2.18 percent in the traditional statin group, most of whom were taking moderate or high intensity regimens of the cholesterol-lowering drugs.
"The reduction in LDL was profound and that may be why we saw a marked reduction in cardiovascular events so quickly," said lead author Marc Sabatine, senior physician in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
"It suggests that if we can drive a patient's LDL cholesterol down a large amount to a very low level, we may start to see a benefit sooner than would be expected with a more modest intervention."
High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease, the leading killer worldwide.
The study, which was funded by the drugmaker, Amgen, showed few cardiovascular events among both groups — just 60 total, so more data from a long-term study of 27,000 people expected in 2017 should shed more light on the drug's effectiveness.
The FDA may decide to make the treatment available after an expected review of the data later this year.
"We won't have any definitive answers until this larger trial we are doing is complete, but these data now give us a sense for the potential clinical benefit of these drugs," Sabatine said.
The results were presented at the American College of Cardiology annual conference in San Diego, California, and published simultaneously in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Bombs found in camp for displaced people in Maiduguri

Soldiers on Saturday detonated two homemade bombs found in a camp housing people displaced by Boko Haram violence in Maiduguri.
Two men suspected of planting the explosives were arrested and an investigation is ongoing, they said.
The bombs were found in the city's Yerwa primary school, prompting panic until soldiers destroyed the bombs from a distance.
The school was converted into a camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) after Boko Haram Islamists captured the town of Bama, some 70 kilometres (43 miles) from Maiduguri, last July.
"Two improvised bombs were found in Yerwa primary school IDP camp by the people who notified soldiers stationed nearby," local vigilante Ari Butari said.
"The soldiers asked people to evacuate before shooting the bombs from a distance, triggering two explosions that didn't harm anyone," he said.
"Two men were arrested on accusation that they were involved in planting the bombs. They drew suspicion because they were not known to be living in the camp," he added.
Butari accused Boko Haram of being behind the foiled bomb attack.
His account was supported by Suleiman Yusuf, an IDP staying in the camp.
"Some people saw two abandoned black polythene bags and called the attention of our leaders in the camp who in turn informed security personnel," Yusuf said.
"The bags turned out to be containing bombs and the soldiers asked everyone to stay clear of the bombs which they detonated from a distance," he said.
He confirmed that two men were detained after raising suspicions.
"Everyone is vigilant and once a new face shows up we all remain on the alert," he said.
Scores of IDP camps dot Maiduguri following a huge influx of people fleeing towns and villages seized by Boko Haram, doubling the population of the city which stood at around one million people.
This is believed to be the first foiled attempt to attack any of the camps in the city.
The six-year-old Boko Haram insurgency has killed some 13,000 people and displaced 1.5 million in Nigeria and neighbouring countries. (AFP)

Three killed, five vehicles, 22 shops burnt in Mile 12 market fire

Three bodies were recovered after 22 shops and five vehicles were razed, Friday, when a section of the popular Mile 12 market in Kosofe local government, Lagos State was razed.
Although the cause of the incident remains unknown but eye witnesses' account said the inferno which started around 4.30am may have been ignited by the illegal petroleum business which the section is associated with.
According to eye witnesses' account, the burnt vehicles were some of the trucks used in transacting the illegal business while the bodies were some of the suspected dealers of the business before the disaster was recorded.
An eye witness Mr Innocent Alabari said one of the shops was as at 2am, been delivered of a new stock unsuspecting that the fire will strike.

Naked women protest in Ekiti‎

Angry women in Emure Ekiti have protested against the arrest of over 30 of their children by the Police in connection with the alleged attempt to burn the palace of Elemure of Emure Ekiti, Oba Emmanuel Adebayo, a retired Assistant Inspector General of Poilce and ex-Commissioner of Police in Lagos and Abuja.

The PUNCH gathered that the women, some of whom appeared half-naked on Wednesday, held leaves and sang hate songs against the monarch, demanding the release of their children.

Trouble started last Monday, when a group of angry youths of the community took to the streets to protest against power cut by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company.

They also complained against disruption of banking service from the only bank in the community for over seven months.

A resident, Olaoye Olayinka, said efforts by Oba Adebayo to stop the protest was met with stiff resistance by the angry youths who blocked the two entry points to the town.

"For the past seven months, we hardly have light 5 times in a month, and when they bring it, it was only in the mid-night when we would be asleep.

"Why this bad treatment from the electricity firm is so painful is because, of all Ekiti communities, Emure pays the highest bill, you can go find out about this. But still we are not enjoying the benefit, instead we are getting crazy bills for very bad service.

"The electricity firm slams us with N8,000, N6,000, N7,000 bills for each household, and for the artisans who are just welders, each of them get N15,000 a month. It's ridiculous. And we have warned the boys coming to cut the power supply anytime they feel like," Olayinka said.

The Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, had told journalists that the youths were arrested for attempting to burn the king's palace and for attacking the police station in the town.

"The Emure people protested against BEDC for disconnecting their light. What we disagreed with was the mode of protest. They became very violent; attacked the palace and the Police Station. We moved in and succeeded in quelling the violence. The area is calm now.

"We are screening those arrested and we have released some of them on bail. We are also looking at the case of arson which is not bailable because the palace was nearly set on fire."

The Police Public Relations Officer, Alberto Adeyemi, told our correspondent on Sunday that those arrested had been released except five of them still under investigation.

"The remaining five are at the State Criminal Investigation Department assisting police in the investigation. They would be charged to court if found culpable depending on their level of involvement."

VP, northern govs shun ACF lecture

Northern leaders including Vice-President Namadi Sambo and governors of the region on Saturday shunned the 56th Anniversary lecture of the Arewa Consultative Forum.
Apart from Kaduna State Governor, Mukhtar Yero, 18 other governors of the North were absent at the 56th anniversary lecture of the attainment of self government of the Northern Nigeria.
The lecture has as its theme, 'The North and the Nigerian Federation: the Past, Present and the Future', organised by the ACF in conjunction with the management of Arewa House.
The event was Chaired a former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon, who was represented by Ahmed Joda.
Most of the governors sent their representatives.
Though as a face-saving measure Yero represented the Vice President at the event.
It was gathered at the event that 'bad weather' prevented the vice president's flight from landing.
Last year, Sambo attended the event, where he showcased the laudable programmes and the achievements of the President Goodluck Jonathan Transformation Agenda.
A source told one of our correspondents in Kaduna on Saturday that the vice president's absence might not be unconnected with the open endorsement of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.) as the candidate of the region against Jonathan in the March 28 election.

IG to hand over Saraki money laundering case file to FG

There were indications earlier today Indications that the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and that of the Inspector General of Police might have disagreed on what to do with former Kwara Governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki, on his alleged use of fronts to withdraw the sum of N6 billion from the accounts of a company, Joy Petroleum, domiciled in Intercontinental Bank, now Access.
Initially, the Office of the IG had approached a Federal High Court in Abuja on April 26, 2012 to press charges against the former governor for conspiracy, forgery and stealing after claiming to have initiated a comprehensive investigation into a petition sent to it by Joy Petroleum that it was being denied access by the bank following the illegal change of signatory to the account by unknown persons.
But in a legal advice to the IG on the move to prosecute Saraki and others named by the petitioner, the Attorney General advised against taking any action against Saraki and his aides over the bank issue, since from the records available to his office, the former governor had not committed any offence to warrant such trial.
In the legal document, which Vanguard sighted last night, dated 9thOctober 2012, with reference Number DPP/ADV: 061/12, and signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Mrs. O.O. Fatunde, the AGF Office, noted that it would be improper to hold Saraki liable for the internal actions of the then Intercontinental Bank.
The AGF Office said: "It would therefore be improper and unjust in the circumstance to hold Dr. Saraki , Mr. Pinheiro or indeed the companies criminally liable for the internal actions and decisions of the bank and its officials bordering on exercise of discretion.
"Every customer of a bank (corporate or individual) has the right to apply for a loan on the most favourable terms possible. This alone does not constitute any offence under any law because it is within the discretion of the bank to grant or refuse such loan application.
"Dr. Saraki and Pinheiro are alleged to be connected with the grant of the loans as promoter and director respectively of the companies. By virtue of Section 18 of the Act, a director or any other partner or officer of a company can only be held responsible in that capacity for the actions of the company if the company is guilty of an offence under the Act.
"Since the company in this case cannot be held to have committed any offence under Section 15( 1) (a), it follows that Dr. Saraki and Mr. Pinheiro cannot also be held criminally responsible only on account of having acted as promoter and director of the companies in connection with the said loan," the DPP advised.
However in a new twist that is likely to upturn the whole investigation and pave the way for the prosecution of the former governor, the Attorney General has written a different letter to the IG to hand over the case file to him for further action.
In the new letter, which Vanguard obtained last night, the AGF in insisting that his office needed to carry out further review of the case file before any further action is taken on the matter.
In a memo with reference No. DPP/ADV: 061/12/91 and addressed to the Inspector General of Police with particular attention to the Commissioner of Police Special Fraud Unit, and signed by Haruna Isa Alabi, Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, the AGF said his office wanted the case file to be able to ascertain whether the evidence presented against Saraki and others was borne out of mere suspicion or was capable of sustaining a conviction before trial.
Saraki has said that there was no infraction of any law in the matter, which his companies obtained loans and paid back to the banks through agreed terms of settlement.
But the former IG, Mohammed Abubakar, who initiated the trial of Saraki, had alleged among other things that the former governor made the bank to lose funds by using his fronts while serving as governor to engage in money laundering.

Sina Fadare and Medinat Kanabe research on:The teenage marijuana smoking epidemic

With the rate at which teenagers in Lagos are smoking Indian Hemp as if it is a candy, and going out of fashion, stakeholders are at a crossroad on how best to handle the helpless situation reports Sina Fadare & Medinat Kanabe
They are helpless, homeless, hopeless and perhaps do not know the implications of their actions.  They are smoking marijuana, popularly called Indian hemp, igbo, eja or kukuye on a 24-hours basis as if their lives depend on it. They are products of broken homes and carefree parents who care less about where, when and how they are surviving.  They live their lives on the streets and under the bridges. During the day, they are noticeable at major bus stops and parks across Lagos and other states. And these are aside those permanently operating under the bridge at Oshodi towards the Ilupeju end. Often, you can identify them by their tell-tale unkempt looks, wrapped weed in between their fingers, thick smokes unfurling and melting into the atmosphere, and of course the nauseating odour. Welcome to the little world of teenage hemp smokers,
As early as 5 am, their day starts. They are on the streets, snatching bags, phones and money. Investigation by The Nation revealed that they rarely sleep, preferring to occupy themselves with smoking Indian hemp almost throughout the night. And they're freshly out of the cradle, their ages ranging between 12 -16 years.
"How can they sleep, when throughout the day they are smoking Indian hemp? Definitely sleep will elude them and that is why they are ready-made recruits for buglers and armed robbers," a newspaper vendor under the bridge, who knew virtually all of them, due to years of interacting with them lamented.
We also discovered that some of them have turned under the bridge to their homes. Their clothes could be seen littering the base of the bridge, while those recently washed hung on the barbed wire, supposedly used as demarcation by the authorities to discourage people from making the place a bypass.
A repeat visit to the place on weekends confirmed that the kids actually live under the bridge. Some of them could be seen washing few of pieces of cloths, while others naturally busied themselves with their pastimes, hemp smoking. It did not matter that it was just 6:30 in the morning. We also discovered that they are threats to commuters who trooped to the popular bus terminus to take early bus rides to Lagos Island and other cities and towns outside the state. At one time or the other, a good number of them have fallen prey to these urchins, losing bags, phones and other belongings in the process.
After the morning rush of passengers, some of them move to the garage adjacent their abode to begin a long session of dice and card games, using money, wrist watches and sometimes shoes, most of which were stolen,  to bet. During this time, the big white stick never leaves their fingers. They just can't seem to have enough of the illicit weed.
How teenagers between the ages of 11 to 15 years of age could become hemp addicts in the glare of the ever busy Oshodi, with so many people troop in droves on a per minute basis beats the imagination and raises cause for concern.  More worrisome is the fact that a police station sits just about 10 meters from this spot.
This team of The Nation was however dazed to discover that this trend cuts across the major bus parks and bus stops across the Lagos metropolis. From Fadeyi to Mushin to Bariga; right across to Somolu, Ketu, Pen Cinema, Abbatoir, Mile 12, Olodana Oto Apapa,  Agege, Ajelogo, Agric Ikorodu, Agbole area of Ikotun, Itire, Ojuelegba, Obalende; the story is the same. And so it is official, hordes of teenagers, who should be in school or at vocational training, preparing themselves for a meaningful future, are smoking away their future with impunity.
At Agege area of the state, a middle age man, who identified himself as Baba Kabiru, said he almost fainted the day he learnt that his son who was in primary six was smoking Indian hemp.
He said the poor boy learnt to smoke the weed during his regular trips to the Quranic lesson, which he used to attend after school hours. "Some of the bad boys were living in the same building that is housing the evening class and were using these innocent children as errand boys whenever their master was not around. Gradually my son and some others were inducted into smoking. I got to know one day when my wallet was missing. In the confusion of searching everywhere, l checked his school bag where l saw two raps of Indian hemp."
Baba Kabiru who disclosed that he was unable to sleep that night said upon investigation he learnt that they have a group and they have been involved for a while. "l had to change his school and move away from the environment because l was too shocked to see my son, a primary school pupil smoking Indian hemp. The experience is still strange to me." He lamented.
The entrance of Our Lady Lourdes Girls Primary School on Clegg Street in Surulere area of Lagos is another notorious joint that harbours hemp-smoking kids. On a daily bases, immediately the school closes for the day, these kids take charge and smoke marijuana till the wee hours of the day.
Again, the Area  'C' Police Division  is very close to the school compound, but somehow, they seem to be content with looking elsewhere, whilst this atrocity go on.
Speaking to The Nation on condition of anonymity, a police officer from the command said most of the parents of these kids are within the vicinity, but unfortunately they cannot put them under control, adding that "there is little the police can do because some of these kids are under-age and cannot be put behind bars."
As a panacea, he challenged the government to wake up to its responsibility and send these kids to rehabilitation homes, where they can learn different vocations to make useful to themselves and society later in life.
At Obalende, another kid hemp smoking rendezvous assailed our reporter. Here we gathered that weed smoking, particularly among the teenagers, is like a carnival. A middle-aged woman, Labake Ilori who sells assorted wines in the area questioned this reporter's naivety, asking if he was new in Lagos not to know that smoking of Indian hemp in the vicinity by the teenagers is a daily occurrence.
"Are you new in Lagos? All these kids are chain hemp smokers, virtually from morning till late into the night. Some of them don't have anywhere to go; therefore they live on the streets and sleep in most of the kiosks. Occasionally the police come here to raid them, but after few days you see them again," she explained.
She lamented that at the dawn or night, they become uncontrollable and there is nothing they cannot steal. "You can see all of us are very careful and keep our money inside our inner purse otherwise they can do anything."
 Candidates for nuthouse
If the kid hemp smokers are potential recruits into the world of crime, they are also potential patients at psychiatric homes. The question thus arises; why are they left to waste away their future under the bridges and at bus terminals, when their parents, government officials and even the police could have kept them in check?
Lagos State Police Public Relation Officer, Mr.  Nwosu Kenneth said that the police in the State are doing everything within its power to arrest the situation.
He pointed out that Oshodi area of the state is a peculiar terrain that remains a concern to the police authority, adding that "when we arrest people we know are underage and cannot really be arrested under the criminal justice system, we take them to juvenile homes for care because some of them get involved in it because of lack of care."
He said the police in partnership with the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW and the government of Lagos State are trying to mop up the area in order to save the future of the kids. "Most of the kids you see there are not from a home; they are on their own, fending for themselves; so they are vulnerable and easily lured into these things. We do clean up there about twice a week. We rescue these kids because they cannot be arrested. If you have information about how we can get the kids, so they can be rescued, it will be much appreciated."
Kenneth however regrets that the kids keep returning to the dark areas, despite being rescued on a daily basis. He ascribed this to the fact that these are places where they earn their living, albeit illegitimately.
Speaking in the same vein, Head of Public Affairs of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Mr.  Ofoyeju Mitchell said kids get involved in marijuana due to their ignorance of the consequences of the drug.
Mitchell while speaking to The Nation in his office noted that "some are so carried away by the type of peer groups they keep that they don't even know when get involved.  If they are unfortunate to have friends who are involved, they are likely to succumb to pressure by their peers to try it out."
According to Mitchell most of the kids do not have what you can call a home; therefore they are ready-made tools for such a gamble. "Lack of good upbringing also leads to it because when children are not properly cared for, it affects. You don't know their friends or what they do; when they keep late nights, nobody asks where they are coming from. And children being what they are, like to experiment, even when they know that government have said the drug abuse is bad. They want to experiment and have a taste of that much-talked-about euphoric pleasurable feeling, forgetting that the feeling is addictive."
He lamented that these kids are products of broken homes, who possibly have nobody to lean on for survival and therefore take solace in bad peer groups. "There are children that don't even know where they are from or where their parents are. We have counseled some that we expect them to go back home, but they can't because of one reason or the other. Some live under the bridge in Lagos but their parents are in Osogbo.  And when they are on the streets, they are exposed to all forms of abuses because they don't have guidance."
Mitchell pointed out that the NDLEA has put up a lot of enlightenment programmes to assist them. "We have introduced drug free clubs in schools. The club builds capacity among the children. They have their NGO. We  talk to them and give them  fliers, and whenever they are having programmes like debate or seminar within their school, they invite us as patrons to come and present talks and we believe that by involving them in anti-drug abuse programme, it will help to inculcate a drug free lifestyle in them, and it is working."
Mitchell said that in as much as the agency wants these kids off the street, it has its limitations. "We have challenges of accommodation for them. After we counsel them, we can give them money to go back to their various homes around the country, but there is no proper follow-up or monitoring to know if they actually went home.
"There are some others that after the counseling process, they go back home but because of lack of follow-up we re-admit them again. We expect that their parents would take over after they complete the process. Some say that nobody cared for them after getting home, but their friends came and they followed them and started taking the substance again."
He argued that the daunting challenge at hand is that all hands must be on deck to monitor these kids, particularly by their parents who have greater responsibility towards them before they turn to social menace.
"We have raided Oshodi, Obalende and some other notorious spots in Lagos and we do that on regular bases, but we cannot do it alone. Parents must be involved; NGOs, civil society groups, opinion leaders, traditional rulers, individuals. We have a dedicated phone line on our website that people use but we also advise other people to use it. I cannot know what is happening in your area even though we have people who go out to raid notorious places." He said.
Reacting to the allegation that the government of Lagos State is not doing enough to take these kids off the streets, a deputy director at the ministry of Environment, Lagos State, who spoke to The Nation on condition of anonymity said the government is trying to do its best but challenged parents not to give birth to children they cannot take care of, lest they become social deviants.
According to him the government in conjunction with relevant security agencies raids these notorious dark spots, but the kids are always back there after "escaping from our custody at juvenile homes."
He lamented that the government is busy about electioneering at the moment and most of these kids have been conscripted into pasting posters, especially at night; therefore he said "To have a meaningful programme for them will be after this election palaver."
