Casmir Igbokwe writes on A Nation And Her Poisoned Apples

Tunji has a shop that is well located in the heart of Ikeja. He has a habit of waving at me each time I pass by his shop. It is a way of greeting and a way of drawing my attention to what he is selling. As I was driving home a few days ago, he waved and smiled. I stopped by to buy some items.
"Do you want some biscuits for the children?" he asked. I didn't want biscuits because I had bought some tantalising red apples from Mallam, a fruit seller in one of the major streets in Ikeja.
"Apples!" the man exclaimed, "Be careful of apples o!" I was alarmed. What is it with apples again? I wondered. My mind went straight to the rumour some years back that a former Head of State died in office after munching some poisoned apples allegedly given to him by some Indian prostitutes.
I also remembered how Eve gave Adam the forbidden fruit that led to their being banished from paradise. I learnt that that forbidden fruit was an apple.
I was still ruminating when Tunji cut in, "I heard that Boko Haram people have poisoned apples in Lagos. They are targeting Lagos seriously and they want to kill as many people as possible. They recruited all these mallams selling fruits to do it."

Medinat Kanabe writes on RESURRECTED Strange diseases staging comeback

In this report Medinat Kanabe talks to medical experts about diseases that had hitherto become extinct but are staging a return.
When Nigeria defeated the Ebola Virus Disease many turned the victory into a joke by saying Nigerians are so terrible they have 'eaten' the virus when other countries affected by it have been struggling to curb the spread. Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea are still battling with the scourge rolling back years of economic struggle.
Although Nigeria has been declared EVD free by the World Health Organisation (WHO), its representative in Nigeria Rui Gama Vaz said: "The virus is gone for now. The outbreak in Nigeria has been defeated. This is a spectacular success story that shows to the world Ebola can be contained, but we must be clear that we have only won a battle. The war will only end when West Africa is declared free of Ebola."
The victory belongs to the people, leaders and institutions that pursued their mission with vigour led by the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola.

Casmir Igbokwe writes on Nigeria’s old impeachment games

When former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, opens his mouth to talk about governance in Nigeria, what usually comes out is poison.
Recently the former president labelled many Nigerian federal legislators as thieves and looters. According to him, they indulge in extorting money from departments, contractors and ministries. "When the guard is the thief," Obasanjo lamented, "only God can keep the house safe and secure."
With what is presently playing out at the National Assembly of Nigeria, Obasanjo may be right after all. Currently, some lawmakers are purportedly plotting to remove President Goodluck Jonathan from office. About 65 out of 109 Senators are reportedly involved in the plot.
These anti-Jonathan lawmakers have told whoever cared to listen that they would table the president's sins on December 16, 2014 when they reconvene from their current recess.

Only poverty lover wants Jonathan – Osinbajo

The running mate to the All Progressives Congress, APC presidential candidate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday, said the poor state of the nation's economy has plunged many Nigerians into poverty.
He added that there must be a change of government at the federal level to liberate Nigerians from poverty.
The former Attorney General of Lagos State spoke at a town hall meeting with artisans, tradesmen and farmers, organised by the Lagos State Government in Ikeja.
He said only those who love poverty and would want to remain perpetually in hunger that would vote for President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.
Osinbajo said, "No one is ignorant of all that is happening in this country. No one likes hunger and poverty, but people are hungry. In 2015, only those who love to continue to be hungry that would prefer that the government in power at the centre remains there.
"By God's grace, we will remove them from the seat of power. The people there presently cannot do anything because they don't know what to do. They lack the capacity and capability to govern the country."

Nigerians will praise me after I leave office -Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said he did not expect Nigerians to shower praises on him while still in office.
He said it was normal that public office holders would only be commended after leaving office by the time their achievements were compared with those of their predecessors.
Jonathan spoke while granting audience to a delegation from his home state, Bayelsa, led by Governor Seriake Dickson.
But the President's wife, Patience, was again absent during the visit of the Bayelsa delegation.
Jonathan, however, told members of the delegation that his wife would have joined him to receive them but for an urgent trip she made outside Abuja.
He said Patience left Abuja in the morning for their home state to oversee the preparation for the traditional marriage of his cousin's daughter holding in Bayelsa State on Saturday.
He said he would also be travelling for the event on Friday and return to Abuja on Sunday.
Members of the delegation led by Dickson were in the Presidential Villa, Abuja to felicitate with the President on the Christmas and New Year festivities.

A desperate Bakassi refugee in Cross River State has been forced to use his 12-year-old daughter as collateral for a loan which he is now unable to repay.

However, the sick daughter, Blessing died, in 2013 and the younger one, Mary is forced to remain in slavery due to her father's inability to pay back the money he borrowed.

"I was desperate to save Blessing from dying. Her situation had become critical at that time. That was the only thing I could do to salvage the situation. I am heartbroken. I don't know what came over me. It was sheer desperation I gave out my daughter so that the man would accept to give us the money," he said.
Mary on the other hand opened up on her life in slavery:

Usman revealed that over 4,000 people were offered shelter in the area with 1,385 out of the number been camped and fed by Niger Government while 3,000 refuges lived with friends and relatives in Maine Soroa town.
Addressing the refugees, Gaidam promised that the state government would extend support to them, but asked them to return home, noting that more military operatives would be deplored in the area to beef up security.

One person has died as an explosive planted in a football field in Potiskum, Yobe State in north-east Nigeria detonated.
Residents of Potiskum told Channels Television that the explosion occurred at the Arikime Primary School playing ground and killed a sugar-cane vendor who was heading home after the day's trading.
They believe the planted bomb that went off around 6:30pm local time on Sunday was targeted at footballers using the playing ground.
The bomber, according to witnesses, was aiming at killing early morning football players who often besiege the busy Arikime playing ground for early exercise only to be triggered prematurely by the sugar-cane seller.

Borno spends N600m monthly to feed people displaced by Boko Haram — Deputy Gov.

Borno State government says it is expending over N600 million monthly on the feeding of those displaced by the activities of insurgency in 20 local government areas of the state.
The state Deputy Governor, Zannah Mustapha, made this known while speaking to newsmen in Yola, Adamawa State, on Saturday.
Mr. Mustapha said there were about two million internally displaced persons in Maiduguri.
"We have of recent also evacuated about 43,000 IDPs of Borno indigene from Adamawa to Maiduguri," he said.
He explained that the government had commenced free food programme for both the IDPs in camps and those staying with relatives in the state.
Mr. Mustapha, who solicited for Federal Government's assistance, said the state government was expending almost all its monthly allocation on IDPs.
Mr. Mustapha said 90 per cent of the people could not cultivate their farmland due to insecurity, a development, he explained, posed a serious threat to food security in the state.

FG dismisses Oshiomhole's claim of $30bn ECA missing fund

The Federal Government has said that the allegations by Governor Adams Oshiomhole, that the sum of $30bn (N5.04trn) is missing from the Excess Crude Account is not true.
The Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said in a statement on Saturday by her Special Adviser on Communications, Mr Paul Nwabuikwu, that the allegation was "shocking."
Oshiomhole had on Thursday accused the Federal Government of failing to account for about $30bn that had accrued to the excess crude account in the last three years.
The governor had said Nigeria's budgets for the past three years had been based on an oil benchmark of $77 and $79, while the average price of the country's crude had been $108 per barrel.
This, according to the governor, gives an average surplus of $30 per barrel.
He had said, "Ideally, we ought to be saving $36 per barrel on the 2.3 million barrel a day over the past three years and if you look at these numbers you will find that what we have in our excess crude oil account should be over $30bn but as we speak, we have barely $3bn in our excess crude account.

Ekiti unpaid salary: Gov. Fayose wants you to blame it on Fayemi by Kolapo Olapoju

According to Ayo Fayose, the immediate past governor of Ekiti, Kayode Fayemi, is responsible for the unpaid salaries of Ekiti state workers.
During his monthly media chat, "Meet Your Governor", governor Fayose said the financial situation of the state has made it difficult for him to pay the salary arrears he inherited from Fayemi.
The governor explained that the deductions from the allocation of the state from the bond sourced by the last administration and commercial loans obtained from banks had adversely affected the state's finances.
He said: "I became governor on October 16 and that is two months and ten days now and I want to state categorically that I have managed the resources of the state very well."
"Now coming here to tell the people that I will pay September salaries, no, no, I will not say that. The salaries I am paying now, I had interface with banks to give me leeway for six months to be able to arrange myself.

NANS Declares ‘War’ on Governor Sule Lamido

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has concluded plans to declare 'war' on Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido over his alleged support for a 45-year-old non-student, Tijjani Usman, who is parading himself as NANS president.
In a telephone interview with LEADERSHIP on Friday, the legitimate President of NANS, Comrade Ali Wali, who was duly elected by Nigerian students to represent them, alleged that Governor Sule Lamido was using Tijjani Usman to work against the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan by turning Nigerian students against him.
He said Governor Lamido's grand plan was to ensure that President Jonathan no longer enjoyed the tremendous support of the students, by mobilising student protests against government policies and programmes, especially in the education sector, thereby, damaging the President's popularity and credibility.

She said her mother and father, both Boko Haram sympathisers, took her to an insurgent hideout in a forest near the town of Gidan Zana in Kano state.
She said one alleged militant leader asked her whether she knew what a suicide bombing was.
"They said, 'Can you do it?' I said no.
"They said, 'You will go to heaven if you do it.' I said 'No I can't.' They said they would shoot me or throw me into a dungeon," Zahra'u told journalists.

Arrested Madagascar’s ex-president Ravalomanana moved home

Former president Marc Ravalomanana is being allowed to serve his house arrest at his own home, Madagascar's government said Friday.
Ravalomanana, ousted in a 2009 coup, had been held under house arrest in the northern town of Antsiranana (also known as Diego Suarez) since returning from exile in South Africa in October.
However he discreetly returned home Wednesday evening and spent the Christmas holiday with this family.
"The decree assigning Marc Ravalomanana to house arrest has not been rescinded but the place has been changed … he has been transferred to his home in Antananarivo," a senior Interior Ministry official, Thierry Rakotonarivo, told AFP.
The former president's spokesman told the daily Madagascar Express that Ravalomanana's contacts with the outside world were still extremely restricted and that he cannot receive visitors without permission.
Ravalomanana slipped back into Madagascar in October, five years after a military coup and two months of violent protests forced him to flee abroad.

PDP did a good job falsely branding Buhari an Islamic extremist – Osinbajo

The Vice Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Yemi Osinbajo, Wednesday said the Islamic extremist tag hung on Muhammadu Buhari does not reflect his character.
At an interaction with young people, volunteers, and social media influencers in Lagos, Mr. Osinbajo blamed the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] for stamping that false identity on Mr. Buhari.
"The PDP did a good job in branding General Buhari as an Islamic extremist," said Mr. Osinbajo, a professor of Law, noting that Mr. Buhari joined the Nigerian army at a time the military was filled with detribalized officers.
"During his time as a Head of State, he had more Christians in his cabinet than he had Muslims. He even gave his daughter in marriage to a Christian. Which Islamic extremist would even tolerate that.
"Buhari had full powers during his military era to make Nigeria join the Muslim Organization, OIC, but refused."
On Tuesday, Mr. Buhari, the APC's presidential candidate, had met with a similar group of young people in Lagos to discuss ideas and vision about the country's future. On Monday, he had announced his entry into the social media space by garnering over 30,000 Twitter followers within 12 hours.
Wednesday's meeting with Mr. Osinbajo began with the airing of a video reeling out grim statistics of the Nigerian situation.

Baby falls off mum’s back on Okada, crushed by truck

Nigeria, U.S. ties cordial, says Adefuye

NIGERIA'S Ambassador to the United States (U.S.), Prof. Ade Adefuye has refuted a report in The Guardian of Sunday, December 21, 2014 entitled, 'Why we stopped buying Nigeria's oil by White House,' expressing his disagreement with what he called "some of the assumptions, projections and conclusions" in the publication.
Adefuye said: "On the issue of U.S. purchase of Nigeria's oil, the explanation by the U.S. Director of National Economic Council, Mr. Jeff Zients is correct.  The increase in America's domestic oil production by 50 per cent naturally reduced the need for America to buy oil from abroad.  America is now much less dependent on oil import.  But the quantity of oil production is subject to fluctuation.      Whenever the quantity of internal oil production in the U.S. necessitates the need to import, Nigeria's oil because of its quality will be top of U.S. priority.  This much the Embassy had been assured.

China's Alibaba spent $160m fighting fake goods

CHINESE e-commerce giant Alibaba says it has spent more than $160m (£103m) fighting fake goods on its websites from the beginning of 2013 to November of this year.
The company will add another 200 people next year to the 2,000 workers tackling counterfeit goods on its sites.
That is in addition to the 5,400 volunteers who are already involved in its daily online surveillance plan.

"We bear a serious responsibility in this fight against counterfeits," said Jonathan Lu, chief executive of Alibaba Group in a

Court orders accelerated hearing of suit over Niger PDP Gov primaries

A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, ordered accelerated hearing in the suit instituted by a governorship aspirant under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenging the results of the party's recently -held governorship primaries in Niger State.
In a ruling on Monday, on a motion for an interlocutory injunction filed by the plaintiff, Mr Mu'azu Hanafi Sudan, to restrain the PDP from submitting the name of Alhaji Umar Nasko to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as governorship candidate for Niger State, the court held that since time was of essence in the matter, it would order for an accelerated hearing of the case.
The presiding judge, Justice Ahmed Ramat Mohammed, held that the court could not grant the plaintiff's requests without delving into the main issues that were for consideration.
Justice Mohammed said: "The court should refrain from making positive pronouncements that touch on the substantive suit because it prejudges the real matter in controversy" and consequently, he declined Sudan's application.
"Based on the above reasoning, I am unable to grant the prayers contained in the plaintiff's motion for order of interlocutory injunction.

Job losses loom as Naira sells 194 to dollar

The continuous fall in the price of crude oil in the international market and the recent devaluation of the nation's currency, the naira, are putting serious pressure on the economy, with the currency experiencing a free fall.
The naira exchanged for between 192 and 194 to the United States dollar at the parallel or street market on Friday. Earlier in the week, it sold for N188 against the dollar at the same market.
Our correspondents similarly gathered that the pound and euro sold for between N294 and N296, and N236 to N238, respectively on the streets of Lagos on Friday.
The continued fall in crude oil price had forced the Central Bank of Nigeria to use a huge chunk of the nation's external reserves to defend the naira.
The persistent depreciation of the naira, however, forced the CBN to on November 25 devalue the currency against the dollar by eight per cent from N155 to N168.
The central bank thus expected the naira to sell against the dollar for between N160 and N176.
However, the naira has been selling outside the CBN target band at the interbank forex market (where the banks sell to themselves and their customers), a situation that has fuelled speculation among analysts that the bank may be forced to devalue the currency soon again.
As of Friday, the naira closed against the dollar at N184.50 at the interbank market.
