Pains of incest victims

Citing a plethora of cases of incestuous abuses, Medinat Kanabe reviews the horrible effects of incest on victims, while also exploring the signs and effectiveness of the legal system.

Little Matilda (not real name) was eight when she was sexually abused by her uncle. Following that experience, she became sexually wild and began experimenting on her own, initiating her friends at school to sex in the process. She was sleeping with boys and girls alike in school, and even with her brother at home. Often when she slept with her brother, she called on her younger ones to come watch. Due to no fault of hers, little Matilda thus transformed into more or less a time bomb and a bad influence on her immediate communities, having  lost her innocence at a very tender age.

Extreme child abuse: Some horror tales

Medinat Kanabe takes a look at cases of parental punishment and discipline gone extreme, including outright child abuse and neglect, and the place of the law in such matters.

THE one who spares his rod hates his child but the one who loves his child is diligent in disciplining him.” So says a verse in the book of Proverb. Even the Muslims have a verse that testifies to this culture in their holy book. It is therefore not surprising that Nigerians have largely embraced corporal punishment in their homes, aka disciplining the child. But just how far can one go? Recent news hitting the waves have shown increased cases of extreme child brutality in the name of discipline, highlighting seemingly the helplessness of some children in the hands of their parents or guardians.

Boko Haram want to trade Chibok girls for imprisoned terrorists

Boko Haram has announced its willingness to swap over 200 of the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped in April 2014 for 16 terrorists who are being held by the government.
An anonymous human rights activist told the Associated Press that the group made the same offer last year when Goodluck Jonathan was president. That deal fell through due to last-minute problems. The activist claimed the swap was “stymied by the Department for State Service intelligence agency” and “the agency said it was holding only four of the militants sought by Boko Haram.”
Fred Eno, another human rights activist who took part in last year’s negotiations, confirmed “another window of opportunity opened,” but refused to divulge any details. Eno also said that new President Muhammadu Buhari, who only took office five weeks ago, offered the terrorist group “a clean slate” to persuade them back to the negotiating table. No one said how many jihadists the intelligence agency has behind bars. Buhari fired the agency’s leader last week.
Sir Andrew Pocock, the British high commissioner to Nigeria, does not believe the government should negotiate or even speak to the terrorist group. However, he admits a rescue mission for the girls is too risky.
“The only way for the return of the girls, in my personal opinion, is through the defeat of Boko Haram,” he explained. “I don’t think we will advocate talking to people that abduct innocent civilians and cut people’s throats on video and show it to the rest of the world. But what we could be talking about is disarmament and a rehabilitation process for those who are willing to put down their weapons.”

Court grants Ohakim N270m bail for N270m fraud

Court grants Ohakim N270m bail for N270m fraud
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday granted a former Governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, bail in the sum of N270m.
Ohakim, who is being prosecuted for N270m fraud allegedly perpetrated in 2008, is to produce a surety resident in Abuja to guarantee the bail.
Justice Adeniyi Ademola, in his ruling on the bail application, filed by Ohakim, also ordered the prosecuting agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, ‎to submit the passport and other travel documents seized from the former governor to the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court.
The judge was silent on where the accused person should remain pending when he would meet the bail conditions.
But Justice Ademola had, on Wednesday, ordered the accused person to remain in EFCC custody pending the hearing of his bail application on Thursday.
At the hearing of the bail application on Thursday, the defence counsel, Chief Chris Uche (SAN), urged the court to grant his client’s prayer.
He said his client, whose passport had been seized by the EFCC, had remained faithful to the bail conditions granted him by the anti-graft agency.
But the prosecutor, Mr. Festus Keyamo, opposed the bail.
He argued that rather than granting bail to the accused person‎, the court should grant an accelerated hearing.
But the judge in his ruling held that the accused person had placed sufficient materials before the court to warrant granting him bail.
The EFCC had on Wednesday arraigned Ohakim on three counts of fraud, including making cash payment of $2.29m (N270m) for a property in Asokoro, Abuja.
The prosecution also accused the former governor of collaborating with Tweenex Consociates H.D. Ltd. ‎to conceal the ownership of the property by drafting an agreement portraying him as a tenant in the property.
Ohakim, who was governor of Imo State between May 2007 and May 2001, was also accused of failing to declare the property as part of his assets while

PDP predicts that Nigerians’ll beg them to return in 2019

Due to the problems rocking the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, the Peoples Democratic Party has said Nigerians will beg that they come back to rule in 2019.
The National Vice Chairman, South-South Zone, of the PDP, Dr. Cairo Ojugbou, made this remark on Monday at the party’s zonal secretariat in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

On the Rivers and Akwa Ibom State tribunals going on in Abuja, the PDP national vice chairman expressed optimism that the PDP would win.

Ojugbou said, “Rivers and Akwa Ibom State tribunals are sitting in Abuja. No amount of intimidation will make the PDP lose the elections it won freely and fairly in these states. Any move to rig us out will be resisted.”
