The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria has sealed 123 pharmacies
and patent medicine stores in Osun State over unauthorised sale of drugs and for operating without
supervision of pharmacists, among other offences.
The Director, Inspection and Monitoring Department,
Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, Mrs. Anthonia Aruya, said this at a press
conference she addressed in Osogbo on Thursday.
Aruya warned Nigerians against buying drugs from hawkers,
misuse of drugs which, she said, was contributing to the prevalence of some
ailments in the country.
She stated that the PCN received reports of the activities
of unregistered pharmacies engaged in illegal sale of medicines in Osun State.
Aruya added that the quality of the medicines sold at these pharmacies could not be
guaranteed because they had not been inspected.
“At the end of the exercise, a total number of 142 premises
were visited. A total of 123 premises
were sealed and this comprises of 14 pharmacies and 109 patent medicine shops
for offences ranging from unauthorised sale of medicines, operating without the
supervision of a pharmacist, among others.
A total number of 19 premises were given compliance
directives for issues ranging from poor documentation and poor storage
conditions of medicines. The PCN is using this medium to sensitise all
stakeholders to follow the laws that regulate the practice of pharmacy in
Nigeria as the Federal Government will not tolerate indiscriminate sale of
drugs without submission to the regulatory control.”
She also warned pharmacies and patent editing stores engaged in treating patients
to desist from such practice, saying anybody caught would be made to face the
wrath of the law.
