Academic activities temporarily came to a halt on Wednesday morning at the University of Lagos, as lecturers protested against what they called "harsh working conditions."
They particularly accused the authorities of withholding their earned allowances as well as engaging in arbitrary promotion.
The lecturers, whose action was peaceful, however, urged the authorities to urgently address their demands or risk a full-scale industrial action soonest.
They marched round the campus carrying placards bearing inscriptions such as, "ASUU says no to notional promotion"; "no to no vacancy, no promotion policy"; and "no to accumulated leave," among others.
The UNILAG Academic Staff Union of Universities Chairman, Dr. Adelaja Odukoya, who led the protest, said the working conditions in the ivory tower were not only frustrating but also hindering proper teaching and learning.
Apart from the non-payment of their earned allowances, Odukoya alleged that many of his colleagues had remained in one position without promotion for so many years.
