Unemployed youths numbering thousands of Imo State, who besieged the premises of the state secretariat on Port Harcourt Road, Owerri, to pick-up forms for employment, were tear-gas by security operatives in the state.
The job seekers comprising males and females including pregnant and nursing mothers, had trooped out in their thousands for the collection of the form, following the lifting of embargo on employment by state government.
The Nigerian Tribune gathered that undisclosed number of persons allegedly fainted during the stampede while some allegedly sustained injuries in an attempt to escape from the scene. Also, the NigerianTribune learnt that others, especially nursing mothers and pregnant mothers had to run for dear lives, so as not to inhale the tear gas.
When Nigerian Tribune visited the scene many of the jobless youths were seen limping as a result of varying degrees of injuries sustained during the incident while others were wiping off tears caused by irritation of the tear gas.
The exercise which began since Monday and expected to continue till end of Monday, November 24 attracted unprecedented crowd of youths from 27 local government areas in the state.
