Although Nigeria is currently generating about 4,600 megawatts of electricity, President Muhammadu Buhari today directed the Ministry of Power to ensure more is generated and distributed to Nigerian consumers.
He gave the directive to senior Ministry of Power officials, led by the Permanent Secretary, Godknows Igali, who were at the presidential Villa, Abuja, to brief the President on the activities of the ministry.
After the closed-door briefing, Igali told newsmen: “We are doing over 4,600 megawatts of power on the grid and we can do better. But then this is a big improvement from about 3,000MW.
“Other times when we attained 4,000MW, because of pipeline disruptions, we go down to about 2,000MW. We have consistently in the past two months been over 4,500MW, now reaching close to 4,700MW.”
Igali acknowledged that distribution of the power generated remained a huge challenge, and the ministry has directed the distribution companies (Discos) to improve on their networks while providing more pre-paid meters at no cost to the consumers.
He also lamented the situation of electricity theft and estimated billing, which undermine optimum and equitable distribution and usage of electricity in the country.
