2015: NIGERIANS VOTERS CHALLENGED TO TAKE ACTIVE INTEREST IN ELECTIONEERING PROCESS

Nigerians have been implored to take active interest in the process of election of leaders into various elective offices in the run up to the 2015 election in order to prevent emergence of bad leadership.

This charge was the main thrust of lecturers and participants at the 20th Pre-Ramadan lecture of the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni (UMA) held in Lagos at the weekend.
Presenting his lecture with the theme Democracy: beyond Electioneering, the Vice Chancellor of the Sokoto State University, Professor Nuhu Yaqub, declared that in spite of fifteen years of return of civilian rule, Nigerians have not benefited from the government.
He therefore advocated a more diligent engagement by the masses in the choice of their political leaders and observance of the electoral processes.
Delivering his own lecture, Professor Amidu Sanni of the Department of Foreign Language of the Lagos State University charged the voters to hold their leaders accountable.

He condemned the penchant for collecting material gifts from politicians without asking for the source of such gifts.

He also charged Islamic organisations and wealthy individuals to channel some of the fund they spend on sending people on pilgrimage to sponsoring Muslim students studying Arabic and Islamic Studies while lamenting the fact that many of them have had to withdraw from their studies because of inability to pay tuition and other costs.

The event also witnessed formal presentation of scholarship awards to 22 postgraduate students made up of 15 masters and seven PhD students.

Presenting the awards, the UMA president, Alhaji Sikiru Lere Alimi, said the aim of the award is to increase the number of Muslim scholars, while noting with satisfaction that many of the past awardees are already members of the university teaching staff.

He therefore solicited the assistance of individuals and corporate bodies in order to increase the number of awards as well as improve the package
